1. SCANs run on the cluster, not on a cluster node. SCANs provide location independence for the databases, so that client configuration does not have to depend on which nodes are running a particular database.

There are 2 options for defining the SCAN

1. SCAN IP entries (3 IP recommended) in the DNS server (Domain Name Service).

2. IP address was created by using DHCP server while installing Grid Naming Service (GNS)option.

Option 1:

We need network admin to define IP addresses (3) in the corporate DNS server with same alias name.

market-scan.example.com       IN A 191.21.37.151

IN A 191.21.37.152

IN A 191.21.37.153

Example:

SCAN tnsnames.ora

MKTCLUTER =

(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = market-scan.example.com)) PORT=1521))

(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = media)))

Old way tnsnames.ora

MKTCLUTER=(DESCRIPTION=

(ADDRESS =(PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = market1-vip.example.com))(PORT = 1521))

(ADDRESS =(PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = market2-vip.example.com))(PORT = 1521))

(ADDRESS =(PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = market3-vip.example.com))(PORT = 1521))

(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME = media)))
